Piano Teachers Collective
Information and Questionnaire
for Prospective Teachers
The Piano Teachers Collective is a group of established St. Louis Area teachers who exchange some of their students every few months with other teachers. This rotation is done with the belief that multiple teachers can provide a more diverse musical education than can a single excellent teacher. The teachers believe that the more exposures a student has to different areas and types of music, the richer the student's musical foundation will be.
Each teacher will have some 12 meetings with each student, and so the teacher must organize a strategy for delivering his or her best lessons during this limited time frame.
The Piano Teachers Collective is just now being formed. Thanks to the magic of the internet and email, physical meetings might not be necessary. A retired teacher (Michael Laschober) has volunteered to coordinate the project until it can operate on its own, so no dues are anticipated.
There are many practical problems that must be resolved at the outset:
On which day of the week should the lessons be taught?
Should lessons be of a uniform length?
Should lessons be of a uniform cost?
Should there be any type of inter-accountability among the teachers, or is total independence better?
Should new students be recruited by the Collective, or should individual teachers supply current students?
Should teachers be purposefully grouped to assure musical diversity, or should this be left to chance?
What qualifications should a teacher have?
How can teachers be grouped to minimize driving time for students? Zip Codes? Geographical landmarks?
If you are an established teacher who finds merit in the "multiple teacher" approach to piano pedagogy, please express your opinions on the questions posed above. Please send your feedback to the Piano Teachers Collective at: stlpiano@mindspring.com. Thank you!
